Development QA at Supermassive Games on The Inpatient, a PlayStation VR prequel to Until Dawn. My first VR game, where I also helped bring in testers from Sony and kept the story consistent with Until Dawn.

A tense scene from the VR horror game The Inpatient.

Company: Supermassive Games / Sony Interactive Entertainment

The Inpatient was a psychological horror game made just for PlayStation VR, and a prequel to Until Dawn. Your choices change how the story plays out. It was my first VR game, and I was on the core development QA team.

What I did

  • Learned how to test in VR. On top of the usual functional testing there’s player comfort, performance and problems specific to the headset to think about.
  • Onboarded several testers from Sony’s internal QA team, gave them their daily tasks and got them up to speed on the game.
  • Wrote test plans and guides in Confluence so our team and a remote team in Liverpool were working from the same information.
  • Tested the branching story paths and paid close attention to anything that didn’t match Until Dawn.

Keeping it consistent with Until Dawn

Until Dawn fans know that story really well, so anything in a prequel that contradicted it would get noticed. I flagged the inconsistencies I found and pushed for several of them to be changed, and they were.
