Company: Merge Games
Smalland: Survive the Wilds is an open world survival game where you play a tiny character in a giant world. I tested it at Merge Games, and I also ended up capturing gameplay footage for the marketing team.
What I did
- Functional and compliance testing, with a lot of time on the survival systems: crafting, building and combat.
- Wrote test plans and sent feedback to the developer on bugs and how the game played.
- Worked with the marketing team as a capture artist, playing the game and recording footage for the official trailers and other marketing.
Capturing the trailers
Marketing would explain what they wanted a shot to show, and I’d use debug tools to set up the situation and then play it out on camera. It had to look good, and it also had to be clean: no bugs, no hitches, nothing in shot that shouldn’t be there. Knowing the game well as a tester helped a lot with both. The footage went into the official trailers and marketing ahead of the game’s Early Access launch on Steam.
