Back at Supermassive Games on the first Dark Pictures game. I led testing on the Google Stadia version, tested the co-op and Movie Night modes, and started dabbling in test automation.

Company: Supermassive Games

Man of Medan was the first game in The Dark Pictures Anthology, a run of shorter standalone horror games following on from Until Dawn, where your choices decide who lives. It came out on PC, Xbox One and PS4, and was a launch title for Google Stadia.

I came back to Supermassive full time for this one, and I was given a lot more responsibility than before.

What I did

  • Led the testing for the Stadia version. Stadia was brand new, so I researched its technical and compliance requirements and wrote the test plans for it.
  • Tested all three ways to play: single player, two player online co-op, and Movie Night, where up to five people play together locally.
  • Was a main contact for our external QA partner, Pole To Win, and onboarded and led two of their testers who sat with our team.
  • Wrote test cases in Excel and playthrough guides in Confluence to keep track of the huge number of story branches.
  • Started dabbling in test automation, setting up scripts that played through the game automatically to take some of the repetitive work off our hands.

Between three modes, a branching story and four platforms (one of them brand new), there was a lot to cover. Even with the planning, coordination and test writing on top, I logged well over 100 bugs, more than any other tester on the project.

Tools

Jira, Excel for test cases and checklists, Confluence, Unreal Engine 4, Google Stadia, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Supermassive’s own debug tools.
